Many people will check the Internet to find out what deigns are available and the prices but generally they don't actually
purchase the ring online there because of a perceived lack of security.
Buying an engagement ring can be a major investment, second only to buying a house or car, so naturally caution should be
exercised. But, if you take just a few simple precautions, the Internet can be a very useful tool in your search for just the perfect engagement
ring.
To begin with, you will want to deal only with well-known and reputable jewelry sources. You may even find you have a large
jewelry store in your local mall who just happens to have a website. This would be a good place to begin your search. Check the Internet to get
an idea what is available and the price ranges they are in. This will help you when you actually go into the store to see the rings in
person.
Sometimes you will find that stores offer sale items in the store, which are not offered on their website, while at other times the reverse is
true.
You may want to visit your local jewelry stores first to get an idea what is available at what quality and price. Then you can
check the Internet to see if you can find the same engagement ring at an even better price. If the rings, both in the store and the Internet have
certificates listing the color, cut and clarity grades, you should be able to make a fairly accurate comparison.
You will find that most of the mall jewelry stores will carry pretty much the same styles of rings. What you see in one store
you will probably also see in the others. This is not at all unexpected as they are purchasing most of their merchandise from the same
wholesalers.
A small privately owned jewelry store is much more likely to have unusual or even custom made engagement rings, because most
of them have a jeweler in-house who makes the jewelry right there in the store.
Finding custom-made engagement rings is another place where the Internet can come in very handy. You should have no problem
finding a source for custom-made jewelry, and that includes engagement rings.
Before you actually part with any of your hard earned money to a jewelry source on the Internet, you will want to take a few
precautions. To begin with, you will want to thoroughly check out the reputation of the online jeweler, such as asking for references, the names
of organizations they belong to and what kind of experience they have in the jewelry business.
Don't make the mistake of buying the first engagement ring you see, just because you feel the price is right. Also be careful
if the price sounds too good to be true. As with most things, if it does, it probably is. Although I will say, you can usually save quite a bit
by buying online, because the cost of owning a jewelry website is a great deal less than owning a brick and mortar store, so they can afford to
sell for less. Still, you should be very careful.
If you do find just the right engagement ring at just the right price, be certain you pay for it through a reputable escrow
service. The way this kind of escrow service works is you send the money to the escrow service, and the jeweler sends the ring to them. The
escrow service will have the ring checked to be certain it is what the jeweler says it is. Then if everything checks out okay, the ring will be
sent to you, and the money will be sent to the jeweler.
While it is quite possible to purchase jewelry safely on the Internet, you must be very careful if you do. Personally, I
prefer dealing with a jewelry store in person where I can see and touch the merchandise.
